Tablescape Tuesday: Nautical at Night

On an overcast or windy night at our lake house in Ontario, Canada, there is only one spot to eat - but it's a great one.

A simple and elegant nautical theme is perfect in this house with its pine paneling and lighthouse towers. A large model sailboat, plucked from a shelf in the home library, served as the perfect focal point and suited the narrow Mennonite farm table perfectly. White and navy bowls filled with white dahlias accented the sailboat on each side.

Even though it might not be ideal weather for dinning outdoors, we still like to have cocktails on the deck. Large dispensers filled with iced tea and lemonade are left left out most evenings so tat people are free to fill up their cups whenever they please.

Dining at the lake is a casual affair but that doesn't mean that the table doesn't deserve attention. My mother uses a different setting almost every night! My personal favorite is a vintage set; the dinner plates are decorated in navy blue with a logo from a cruise ship, and the salad plates have a small gold anchor logo in the center of the rim.

The plates are placed on top of woven raffia place mats found at the Saturday market in St. Tropez, France. Mixed with navy and white geometric patterned napkins from Madison in Dallas, and life preserver napkin rings, they are the perfect touch.

Blue glassware looks wonderful on almost any summer table with any theme. Navy-handled flatware from Pottery Barn adds a touch of additional color to the natural palette beneath. Other nautical details can be found around the table. The place cards are embellished with a sailor's knot at the top. A silver monkey's fist knot and a vintage brass anchor decorate the table as well. Even the salt and pepper shakers are shaped like lighthouses.

Create your very own nautical-inspired dinner party!

Monogram Monday - Sandcastles

We left our beach holiday yesterday and, although it feels so good to be home, I will miss our daily beach walks.  On one of them, my sister and I came across this fantastic monogrammed sandcastle!  I knew it would be perfect for our monogram monday post so I ran back and grabbed my camera to snap these photos.

Isn't that precious!
Here is a detail of the monogram made from marbles:

And, just for fun, here are two little shots from inside the cottage.  We made a little collage near the entrance of photos from previous summers.  The sunsets are incredible and we take a photo of it almost every night!

On the mantle, a small collection of nautical antiques are displayed.

The rest of the house is filled with piles of books and games and big messes of toys so I can only share two photos!

The nautical details like the silver monkey's fist knot and a vintage brand anchor are really what pulls the whole theme together. Even the salt and pepper shakers are shaped like lighthouses!
How great are these carafes for lemonade and iced tea? They fit in perfectly with our nautical tablescape. I also can't get over that staircase! I love the rope that is zig-zagged down the banister. So great!

I cannot think of a better theme for a wonderful summer evening by the beach!

Monogram Monday - Nautical S

OK...I know the photo is really bad but I couldn't wait to share these fun anchor glasses that I got for my parent's lake house.  The house has a nautical look and, obviously, the S suits their last name so they are perfect for them!  My parents are impossible to buy for so I love finding vintage treasures for them.  I kind of want to copy the monogram and have it embroidered on to some robes or towels for them!  What do you think?
