Etiquette and Protocol:
Just in Time for the Holidays

Holidays should be a time of togetherness with friends and family, but so many of us associate the holidays with stress, excessive spending, too many trips to the mall, fighting for a parking space, crowds, airplane trips with overweight luggage, attending all those holiday parties and trying to figure out what to wear.

Holidays should be a wonderful time, but at times we let the moment get away from us.

Colleen would love to help with a few suggestions to help bring back the holiday cheer:
  • The holiday office parties including exchanging gifts, gifts for the hosts, what to wear,
and when to arrive (and leave), or should you even attend?
  • RSVPs and thank you notes
  • Gifts for your children's teacher for the holidays
  • Having gifts in reserve and "regifting." What happens if you are given a gift and do not
    have one in return?
  • Holiday cards
  • Tipping for the holidays
All of this and much more can be very tricky including how much do you spend, do you continue to give a gift to a person you are not as close over the past year, do you give the boss a gift and does the boss give his/her employees a gift? Remember that this special time of the year is shared and celebrated differently by various cultures and religions, so handling them properly will help avoid any faux pas.

Come and share this interactive luncheon to ask questions you have always wondered or to gain a little insight to help make this time of the year more enjoyable. Keep the holidays fun and a time to share with family and friends.

Prevention and Preparedness

We learned a lot at last week's Feather Your Nest event with Safety and Security Pro and former Secret Service Special Agent James Savage.  He was fascinating!  I walked away from the event feeling safer and stronger than ever before thanks to his wonderful advice and tips.
One of the things that really struck me is the importance of being prepared for something unexpected.  The U.S. Government recommends that we all take time to put together a safety kit for our homes.  Their list of recommendations can be found at www.Ready.gov. The list is wonderful but I must admit I went shopping to put our kit together and it was really hard to find some of the items and the price tag adds up really fast!  I wish that I had known about these pre-prepared kits!  They are easier and less expensive and take up a lot less room than the kit I put together!  Just as Jim Savage recommended, I purchased one for my car and one for our home.  To order yours, please call or email Natalie Miller at nmiller@iaedallas.com or 972-380-4234.

event-4x_01.png
I really hope you will join us for our next Feather Your Nest Luncheon and Speakers Event!  I am really excited about our next event because it could truly save lives.  Even though it is not fun to think about a breach in security or personal safety issues, being prepared for them can save lives.  Our speaker, Jim Savage, is a former Special Agent for the U.S. Secret Service will knock your socks off with his amazing tips and simple tricks to keep you and your family safe and prepared in the event of an emergency.  I hope you will join us at Fearings in the Ritz Carlton.

James A. Savage, Jr. is the Chief of Security Operations for a leading global energy company. This Corporate Security Group is known for its oil and gas ventures and also includes a diverse range of other business units which operate across the globe, including Yemen, Peru and Northern Iraq. The Corporate Security Group is responsible for all matters relating to the protection of critical corporate assets, pro-active preventive strategies, and emergency preparedness programs.

Prior to this position, Jim was a member of the Senior Executive Service and served in a number of protective and investigative positions during his 20 year career as a special agent with the U.S. Secret Service.

Mr. Savage is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and served as a State Trooper for four years with the Texas Department of Public Safety before starting his Federal law enforcement career with the U.S. Secret Service in 1983.

What I learned from Hutton Wilkenson

Our first Feather Your Nest event was so much fun! Thank you to everyone who attended and to the Ritz Carlton. For one reason, our speaker, Hutton Wilkenson, was fascinating and for another reason, Steve Kembel was sitting at my table! Hutton taught us a great deal about what it was like to work with the late, great Tony Duquette, the only American to have a one man design show at the Louvre! His books about Tony are amazing and he truly demonstrated Tony's style and flair through old photographs and comical stories. Here are few of the great things that I learned:
-Use your imagination: Tony loved to scour flea markets. I love to do that too! Hutton showed us an amazing photograph of a court train that he purchased and had made into a dress for his wife! Not only was it incredibly beautiful but it also had a great story!
-Tony said "It is not luxury I live for but beauty." Isn't that great! I absolutely agree! I admit that I love beautiful china and antiques but I must admit that my favorite table settings are the ones I created out of finds from garage sales and the dime stores.
-More is More! Hutton actually titled his book More is More but joked that his next one will be called Enough is Enough! The truth is that more can be more if you do it with style. I loved the example in the book of a wall that Tony covered in abalone shells. Tony actually said that if only one abalone shell existed in the world, there would be wars fought over it. Well, lucky for us, there are kazillions of them! They are incredibly inexpensive but the effect of papering a wall in them was breathtaking beyond words!
Check out Hutton's books for more inspiration. He is so talented, amusing and charming. You will not be disappointed!
