Celebrate Everything!

Darcy Miller has spent the last twenty years learning about and covering celebrations and weddings for Martha Stewart making her the expert above all experts when it comes to entertaining so when I heard that she was putting all of this experience into a book, I was ready to throw a party!  Darcy and I first met many years ago and I'm so thrilled that she pours her art and her heart into parties of all shapes and sizes.  She radiates enthusiasm and seems to celebrate every moment of life!  Today we are celebrating the release of her new book, Celebrate Everything! In honor of her book launch, I asked her four quick questions that I hope will help you be a hostess with the mostest!

How do you stay organized when planning for an event?
- Everyone has their own systems—I wish I could tell you that I have it down! For some people, keeping online records is fine and for others it’s using a notebook. I’m all about writing things down—I have checklists everywhere! Sometimes I’ll think of things during the day and put it in the notes section on my phone or email myself. If you have a thought, writing it down not only helps you keep track of the ideas, but to remember them, too.

Do you have a signature element to your entertaining?
- I have a few! I love to personalize everything. I love to incorporate photos, especially of the guest or guests of honor in unexpected ways: wrapped sweets, menu cards, tooth pick toppers, napkins, etc. I always say that if there’s ever an excuse for cakes and sweets, it’s at a party, whether themed in a color palette or based on the guest of honor (e.g. candy from the decade in which he or she was born). And of course I will find any excuse to sprinkle some confetti on the table, in the envelope invitation or in a favor bag. Lastly, I use my own illustrations to personalize the decor—whether it’s a doodle of the person whose party it is, wedding bells for a bridal shower or a drawing of stork holding a new arrival at a baby shower.

What are your favorite celebration resources?
- Part of the fun of putting parties together is curating your favorite things. Whether it’s looking in a craft store (retail and online) or through Etsy, there are so many options out there today that. In my book, CELEBRATE EVERYTHING!, a big part for me was sourcing everything I used by page and by category so that you can see lists of everything from my featured cakes and sweets to craft supplies from my favorite sources. I also feel lucky to collaborate with such talented experts whether it’s a cake baker or a stationer. Of course, the one thing about writing a book is that once it goes to print, you continue to find new sources all the time…that’s what my Instagram is for!

What is the biggest mistake you have ever made as a hostess and what can we learn from it?
- I guess the one thing that I try to keep in mind is not getting so caught up with the details that you don’t enjoy the party itself. When I got married, I hired a planner to help me the last couple weeks and basically turned off. Whether it’s your wedding or a small dinner party at home, try to be as organized ahead of time so you’re not rushing everything. I always try to give myself a false party date—pretending it’s a week or two before it actually is—to avoid a scramble.

Pixelated Gamer's Birthday Party

My darling son is turning 9 and, after I got over the tears of him growing up too fast (9 is half way to 18 which is when he will leave for college!!!) I set to work planning a small celebration with him.

We started by working on an activity and theme.  He wanted to have a game truck at the house and that sounded easy enough!  I made a call to Games2U and found out that their service was perfect for us.  They sent a truck that allows 12 kids to play monitored and appropriate games for their age.  They enhance the gaming experience with laser lights and coaches to help them improve their games! (This isn't sponsored - I just loved what they did!)  They also offered laser tag which kept the boys running around and burning off some extra energy!  It was a hit!

I have a few major pet-peeves but the biggest one is seeing plastic water bottles with just a few sips taken out of them all around the house so, to solve the problem with this sleepover, I ordered these cute personalized joystick water bottles that doubled as their party favors!

In addition to ordering pizza, I set out this pixel themed candy bar.  It was such a blast to set it up with my son!  He loved working on it.  We ordered lots of bulk candy and various shades of greens and brown.  I even included some veggie chips in the hopes that some might choose that....only one did!  The bar is made up of these amazing plastic bins (only buy half of what you need and use the lids as containers too!).

After a long late night that my husband and I took turns monitoring, we ordered donuts for the boys before the parent's picked them up.

"Game Over" seemed the perfect phrase!

Happy Birthday JR!

Easy Breezy Alfresco Entertaining

I'm so excited that spring is fully in swing and summer is just around the corner.  I've teamed up with World Market for today's post on making the most of your outdoor spaces by hosting some Alfresco Get-Togethers! I love World Market's tip on making the most of your outdoor space and I hope you will check them out. Big Thanks to World Market for sponsoring today's post!

I just got home from Charleston where I attended and spoke at the The Southern C Summit. Every speaker was so inspiring but the quote I will always remember came from Eddie Ross' wonderful presentation.  He said, "Entertaining with out the proper tools is like trying to paint with out brushes." That certainly hit a chord with me because I love collecting and using my tools for entertaining.  So today's post is inspired by Eddie's quote and I hope will provide inspiration and a clear list of all of the tools you will need for your next out-door entertaining event.

Setting the Stage
Let's start with the table and seating!  One of my favorites Alfresco entertaining tips is included in the World Market list: Maximize seating by using benches.  I love this tip!  One of the wonderful things about alfresco entertaining is the casual and easy-going atmosphere but that also means that a few extra people might stop by or maybe a guest will bring a guest.  I don't ever mind that.  I believe that more is merrier but it can certainly throw your table setting a curve ball!  Not if you use benches! Add cushions and have some  extra stools, like this classic blue wicker all-weather stool, around so that all of your guests can gather together and find a seat.  I love both the style and the practicality of this table and bench from World Market that were inspired by the outdoor Beer Gardens in Germany.  The blue steel frame adds a pop of color and is collapsable so you can easily store it away or set it up anywhere!  Don't forget to ground it all with a fantastic out-door rug.  If you are going to be dining after dark, consider adding a few strings of these Edison style lights to your patio.  We added these last year and we love the charm and atmosphere they bring to the space.

Topping the Table
Have you ever tried an oilcloth tablecloth?  They are great for outdoors because you can wipe them off easily.  I love the bright blues and great designs of this one from World Market.  Now, you know how I love linens so I rarely use paper napkins but a casual outdoor get-together certainly calls for a large stack of well designed paper napkins.  There are so many pretty options for paper napkins so, if you are going to skip the linen, spend some time looking for a pretty design that coordinates with the rest of your table design.  Line a few of these live lemon cyprus globes or live ivy topiaries in burlap sacs down the center of your table for an easy centerpiece that will last all season.

Food Service
For outdoor entertaining, I love to mix my nice serving pieces in pottery and porcelain with some more practical pieces like this coconut salad serving bowl.   I love these melamine plates and bowls for an outdoor buffet too!  They are perfect for a casual get together and you don't have to worry about chips or breaks on your patio!  Don't forget to keep some trays in your tool box for entertaining.  They are perfect for carrying things from kitchen to outdoor table or for gathering condiments, napkins and utensils on a side table.

Drinks
Large galvanized buckets are essentail alfresco entertaining tools.  I love to keep a few on hand and fill them to the brim with ice and drinks.  I try to keep the alcoholic beverages separate from the waters and juices so that the children know which bucket they can grab from.  I also like to fill large Mason Jar style glass dispensers with Iced Tea and Lemonade.  It is an easy way to let your guests keep their own cups filled. If you want something a little bit more formal, opt for this pineapple shape!  So darling and the pineapple is a classic symbol of hospitality.  If you are poolside or worried about breakage , I hope you will grab up some acrylic tumblers and glasses.

Happy Hosting!

Pomander Pack Party Favors

Did you like Monday's post about the Mom's coffee I hosted for friends with children born the same year as my own?  I promised I would tell you more about the party favors and I can't wait to hear what you think!

I wanted to send my friends away with an activity they could do with their children and maybe even help them start a new tradition so I made Pomander Packs for them to take home.

I make pomanders with my children every year and I love to see how they decorate their citrus.  It is fun and easy and not all that messy (makes mom happy!) If you follow my Instagram Feed then you know that I monogrammed mine this year!

I packed these darling jars with jadeite lids full of all of the supplies they would need to make pomanders at home and tied a tag with the instructions on the back.  Since you didn't get to join us at the party, I laid out the step-by-step here in the hopes that you might make some with your family!

The first step is to pierce the orange in the pattern that you want to make.  I like to use a fork for strait lines and single toothpick for more complicated sections and designs.

Simply push the cloves into the pierced holes.  My two year old take ages to do it but she loves the challenge!  (I make the pierced holes for her and she pushes in the cloves.)

Tie a ribbon around the orange and add some glue from a hot glue gun to hold it in place.

All done!  Hang it from your tree or mantle and let it dry out. The fragrance is wonderful and the colors are beautiful and bright!  They have a rich history that is fun to read about and share with the children too!

I'd love to know what crafts and traditions you include your children in at Christmastime?  Please leave a comment and let me know!

Big Momma's Turkey Chili

Looking for an easy way to feed your crew over the holidays?  Look no further! My mother's famous and unbelievably easy Turkey Chili recipe is here.

1 lb ground turkey
3 cans corn (drained)
3 cans kidney beans (drained)
1 large can diced tomatoes (drained)
1 jar of Traditional Ragu (my mother insists that it must be Ragu!)
2 packets of Chili Powder
1 cup diced celery

Sauté the turkey until brown

Dump (yes, dump!) all ingredients into a slow cooker and heat.

Serve with Fritos, shredded cheese and sour cream!

We typically make this in a slow cooker but you can do it in a dutch oven as well.  Just be sure to stir it often.

Oh, and by the way, if you are looking for the perfect holiday gift for friends, check out this monogrammed acrylic cookbook holder!  Pair it with your favorite cookbook, like James Farmer's A Time to Cook or Jacqueline Cavender's As the Spur Stirs, for a perfect present!

La Bella Vita

I don't know why I was waiting for an excuse to have a group of friends over this month!  It was so easy to whip together and fun to do.  I need to keep "La Bella Vita" in mind at all times.  It is a great reminder that friends, family and fun are really the most important part of life! I get wrapped up in my busy days and forget to soak in the good times!  That is why this get together was so special to me.

My friends at Frangelico gave me the excuse I was looking for.  I was thrilled when they asked if Justin and I would host a little something at our house so that a small group could taste some of their signature cocktails and enjoy a nice relaxed evening together.

When they told us that Giada was their brand ambassador, we were inspired to bring a little bit of the Italian life into our Texas home.

We covered our dining table in wooden boards and connected them with bunches of plump delicious grapes and mounds of antipasto treats for our guests to nibble on.  Of course we provided plates for those who wanted them but does anything suit La Bella Vita lifestyle more than savory finger foods?

We also set up an olive oil bar with varieties of olive oil and crostini.

"I love incorporating the fresh ingredients I'm using in my cooking as decorations for the table."  - Giada

Well, that was easy to do and so pretty!  Sprigs of Rosemary were mixed in with other greenery all over the house and it smelled so subtle but beautiful.

We also added lemons and limes into our decor for pops of color against our white flowers and overflowing greenery.

We filled little Le Creuset Stoneware Mini Round Cocottes with pasta and passed them around the party.

We served some delicious cocktails using Frangelico.  I learned a lot because I always thought of Frangelico as an "after dinner drink" but these were amazing!

Our friend Doug said that the Frangelico Old Fashioned was the best he had ever had - and it was so much fun to make!  Just stir 1oz Frangelico, 1oz Wild Turkey Bourbon, 1/4oz Triple Sec, 4 dashes of Angostura Bitters in a stirring glass and pour over ice.  Garnish it with a flamed orange peel.

If you have ever read this blog before, you probably know that I have been preaching about the punch bowl!  It is back and if you are serving a large group, this Italian Holiday Punch is a good choice!
2 Parts Frangelico
3 Parts Pomegranate Juice
2 Parts Skyy Infusions Costal Cranberry
1 Part Lime Juice
1/2 Part Orange Juice
1/2 Part Honey Solution
Mix all ingredients together in a large serving bowl or pitcher.  Serve in an ice-filled glass.  Garnish with clove-stuffed orange slices.

I love a guest book alternative, like this gratitude jar from Wisteria.  Isn't it darling?  It comes with all of these beautiful papers and we asked each of our guests to write a little something they were grateful for and pop it in the jar.  I'm going to keep it in my home as a reminder for all that we have to be grateful for.

Party favor bags included her Giada's new cookbook and a bottle of Frangelico.

We expected rain but it turned out to be a beautiful night!  We added some flowers and candles to our tables out side and I was happy that people lingered out!
